Freeze your embryos

Embryo freezing is suitable for women or couples who are going through IVF but wish to preserve the resulting embryos for implantation at a later date.

What is embryo freezing?

Embryo freezing is the process of freezing fertilised embryos as part of IVF treatment. This is achieved by collecting eggs from ovaries, fertilising them to create embryos and freezing them after allowing them to grow for several days. This can be done at different stages of development.

Who should consider embryo freezing?

Embryo freezing may be suitable for you if you have undergone one cycle of IVF but wish to preserve the resulting embryos for implantation at a later date. This may be because our specialists have advised against a fresh transfer, or for those who are simply not ready to have a baby but wish to preserve their fertility.

Embryo freezing is also an option for those whose treatment is cancelled after egg collection for any reason, are facing medical treatment or who are undergoing gender reassignment.

How embryo freezing works

Ovarian stimulation

You will take hormone medication for a few days, in order to mature the eggs within the ovaries.

Monitoring

Egg collection

Once the eggs have reached a suitable size, they are collected in a short procedure at one of our partner clinics.

Eggs fertilised

Once collected, they are fertilised with sperm from either a male partner or a donor in our laboratory, to create resulting embryos.

You'll have regular blood tests and monitoring scans, to check the growth of eggs.

The embryo freezing process is the same, regardless of whether your embryos are being frozen with the aim of preserving fertility, or as part of an IVF cycle. After we have completed our initial consultations and tests, the process can be broken down into 5 steps:

These embryos are assessed by consultants, with high-quality ones placed in individual ‘straws’ and covered in a vitrification solution, before being frozen in liquid nitrogen.

When do I use my embryos?

Once you are ready for pregnancy, we will remove one of your frozen embryos from storage, before thawing and preparing for implantation, with our Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET) treatment package.
