The timeline for ovulation induction to work can vary from person to person. Generally, the treatment begins early in the menstrual cycle, with ovulation typically occurring within 7-14 days after starting the medication. Most individuals will experience a response within one or two cycles. However, if there are no underlying issues beyond ovulation difficulties, pregnancy can often occur within 3-6 months of starting treatment. If ovulation induction isn't successful, other fertility treatment options can be explored.
How long does it take for ovulation induction to work?
How successful is ovulation induction?
The success of ovulation induction depends on several factors, including age, the cause of infertility, overall health, and the type of medication used. For example, in women with conditions like PCOS, ovulation can be successfully triggered in up to 85% of cases. Ovulation induction using Letrozole results in pregnancy in approximately 30% of cases whereas the cumulative pregnancy rates following ovulation induction using gonadotrophins are 22.5%, 40.3% and 47.7% after completing the first, second and third cycles of ovulation induction. Overall, the success rate of ovulation induction is 10-20% per cycle.
Ovulation induction is typically not painful. The process involves taking oral medications or, in some cases, receiving hormone injections. Some individuals may experience mild side effects like bloating or slight discomfort in the lower abdomen as the ovaries respond to the treatment, but these symptoms are generally manageable and short-lived.
Is ovulation induction painful?
Does ovulation induction improve egg quality?
Ovulation induction primarily focuses on encouraging ovulation, but it doesn’t directly improve egg quality. However, by stimulating regular ovulation and creating optimal conditions for conception, it can help in the development and release of a healthy egg. For individuals who are concerned about egg quality, other treatments or lifestyle modifications may be recommended in conjunction with ovulation induction.
Ovulation induction can fail for a variety of reasons. Common factors include incorrect medication dosage, not responding well to certain medications, severe underlying hormonal imbalances, or issues unrelated to ovulation, such as blocked fallopian tubes or male factor infertility. In such cases, a fertility specialist will often adjust the treatment plan or recommend alternative approaches.
Why does ovulation induction fail?
Does ovulation induction cause weight gain?
Weight gain is not a common side effect of ovulation induction, although some individuals may experience bloating or fluid retention during treatment. Any minor fluctuations in weight are typically temporary and related to the body's response to hormone stimulation.
IUI is a type of fertility treatment whereby sperm is directly placed into the womb. This is known as artificial insemination which requires medical intervention, unlike natural conception where sperm travels through the cervix and to the fallopian tubes to fertilise an egg.
How is IUI different from natural conception?
Is IUI more successful than IVF?
IUI can require more cycles than IVF, particularly if either individual has severe fertility issues. However it’s a good starting point for those with low sperm quality or ovulation issues.
The IUI process takes around four weeks from initial testing to taking a pregnancy test, however this can vary depending on the time of your ovulation.
How long is the IUI process?
Can IUI be successful with low AMH?
IUI is a good option for those with low AMH levels and ovarian reserve. It may however take multiple cycles to be successful.

IVF and ICSI are just as effective however for some couples, ICSI can be more successful. Particularly for those with male fertility issues. This is due to individual sperm being injected into the egg.
Is ICSI better than IVF?
How do I test male fertility?
The main way to check male fertility is with a semen analysis. This looks at the quality and quantity of sperm including appearance, concentration and motility. Our at-home male fertility tests are a great place to start and are included within our ICSI treatment package.
ICSI is recommended for those with male infertility issues. This may include low sperm count, poor motility or abnormally shaped sperm. It is also a next option for those who have previously gone through IVF.
Who is best for ICSI?
How painful ICSI is?
ICSI is not a painful fertility treatment. Some patients may experience minimum discomfort after the egg collection procedure however it is carried out under anaesthetic. Injections required during ovary stimulation may cause a little pain but are mostly just slightly uncomfortable.
The embryo transfer will take place during your usual ovulation window. This is typically between day 17-21 of your cycle.
When does FET takes place?
How long does FET take place?
The whole embryo transfer process takes 2-3 weeks. This dates from the transfer of the embryo to the uterus, to the date at which it is determined whether implantation has been successful.
Embryo transfer does not usually hurt, although it may be uncomfortable. The level of discomfort can be compared to a smear test. If you are concerned about the pain from frozen embryo transfer, please speak to your doctor ahead of the procedure.
Does embryo transfer hurt?
How long after FET do you get pregnancy symptoms?
If successful, you may experience early pregnancy symptoms in around two weeks. This includes fatigue, discharge, headaches, spotting, cramping, sore breasts, bloating and nausea.
Generally, around 9 out of 10 embryos will survive the freezing and thawing process. Very rarely, no embryos survive. Sometimes, the embryos that survive lose a cell or two. As long as 50% of the original cells survive the thawing, the chances of success will not be significantly affected.
What is the survival rate of thawing embryos? Will all embryos survive the thaw?
We will speak to you before and after the embryo transfer, and the embryology team will always be available to advise on the embryo quality which is about to be transferred.
Frozen embryos versus fresh embryos. Which have better success rates?
Initially, fresh embryos were thought to have better success rates than frozen embryos. However, improvements in embryo freezing techniques have helped frozen embryo transfer success rates increase year after year, making them very similar to success rates with fresh cycles.
Do embryos stored longer have worse rates of success?
Research around the storage periods is ongoing, but it is not thought that the amount of time that an embryo is in storage affects success. Embryos are stored at around -200°C temperatures and once frozen, do not change.
Does egg freezing affects future fertility?
Egg freezing doesn’t decrease your ovarian reserve and therefore doesn’t affect fertility. Freezing your eggs now won’t impact your chances of getting pregnant naturally in the future.
When can't you freeze your eggs?
You can’t freeze your eggs whilst pregnant or breastfeeding. For this reason some women who want larger families consider egg freezing. In terms of age, you may be able to freeze your eggs up until the age of 43 with FIN IVF.

Can you freeze fertilised eggs?
Fertilised eggs, otherwise known as embryos, can also be frozen. Embryo freezing is a suitable option for those going through IVF who want to preserve resulting embryos for a later date.
Do you gain weight during egg freezing?
Egg freezing can cause weight gain for some individuals due to bloating and water retention, side effects from the extra hormones given during treatment. This is usually temporary and often diminishes after the procedure is complete.
How long should I wait between egg freezing cycles?
It is possible to do back-to-back egg freezing, starting again immediately after the last cycle. Some people prefer to take a break between cycles of a few months or more to give their body and mind a break but this isn’t required.
How successful is sperm freezing?
Sperm freezing is the most successful way to preserve a man’s fertility. Fertility treatment using fresh sperm is just as successful as treatment that uses frozen sperm. This includes IVF.
How safe is sperm freezing?
Sperm freezing is very safe. Whilst not all sperm survive the freezing and thawing process, there are no known risks to patients and children born from frozen sperm.
At what age should I freeze my sperm?
There are no rules as to when a man can freeze his sperm. However sperm quality and quantity tends to be at peak performance in a man’s late 20s and early 30s. If you are concerned about preserving your fertility, it’s a good idea to freeze your sperm before the age of 35 if possible.
What should you not to do before sperm freezing?
Patients are advised to abstain from sexual intercourse or masturbation for 3-4 days before the sperm sample is taken.
Can I freeze my sperm and get a vasectomy?
Men are able to freeze their sperm before having a vasectomy. It’s a much quicker and easy option than potentially reversing the vasectomy in the future.
How long can frozen sperm be stored for?
Sperm samples can be frozen for up to 20 years from the date they are placed into storage. You will however need to renew your consent every year for it to be lawfully stored. If you fail to do so, sperm will be removed and disposed of.
What are the next steps when I want to use my sperm?
You will need to have fertility treatment to use frozen sperm. This includes IVF and IUI. The sperm will be thawed and then used to fertilise the egg to create an embryo.
What happens to sperm I no longer want to use?
If you no longer want to use your frozen sperm, you are able to either donate or dispose of them. Frozen sperm can be donated to someone else who wants to start a family - this is a very generous act that can help those who may be struggling with male infertility and require a sperm donor. It can also be donated to research or be used for training purposes by healthcare professionals.
How long can you freeze embryos?
Fertilised embryos can be frozen for up to 20 years from the date they are placed into storage. You will however have to renew your consent every year.
What is a good number of embryos to freeze?
There is no right answer when it comes to how many embryos to freeze. It all depends on how many viable eggs you have for the fertilisation process, and how many you wish to freeze for future use. A higher number of frozen embryos results in more chances to conceive.
Does freezing an embryo affect it?
Unfortunately not all embryos survive the freezing and thawing process, which means that on occasion, some may not survive. Some embryos may also lose a cell or two however most recover and continue to develop. Freezing embryos has no effect on pregnancy outcomes and infant health.
Is embryo freezing painful?
The embryo freezing process includes ovary stimulation via injection and egg retrieval. This can be mildly uncomfortable but is rarely painful. You may feel sick, bloated or experience cramping, with symptoms resolving within one to two weeks.
What happens to frozen embryos that are not used?
If you decide not to use frozen embryos, there are a few options for what happens next. Unused embryos can be donated to those who are unable to naturally have children, or to be used for stem cell research. They can also be disposed of.
